Rust is a fungus, it spreads by spores. I'm sure it can go after other plants. My black hollyhocks are rust magnets, but I haven't noticed rust spreading to my other plants. Knock wood. April

I should of been asking if the grass rusts spread from one grass to another or one forb to another of the same genera, spieces or family, etc. I did know they were fungus and spread by spores..sorry. I thought I once heard that there were several type of rust with each having it's own host..some requiring two different hosts to complete life cycle...I'm just not sure how or where or if I am confused with something else?

Yes Vera, believe that you are correct. Hollyhock rust for instance will spread to Malva neglecta (and do more damage to it than to hollyhocks).
below is some info (from illinois but should still be helpful). Aside from fungicides the most common and effective management in a non-agricultural setting is cultural control (and you have already been doing that).
