Layering for winter protection

Without using any heat source on some washys, fil, and robusta,

I thought I might try layering with air space in between the layering.

I had the house re carpeted this summer, and had lots of scrap of berber carpet and 5/8 pad left over,so I tied the leaves up,wrap the pad around the trunk, plastic side out, stakes on both sides then carpet around those stakes, then hard plastic tuf stuf, corrugated poly wrapped around all that, then covered with old quilts from yard sales I bought, then top that with greenhouse plastic, over the whole thing, with all that dead air space between all that layering, hopefully it will create enough warm,to save the trunks from freezing and sphere lost.

Only thing that worries me if there will moisture build up inside and fall back into the crown and cause crown rot.

I lost 3 trachys, last year, and all I had covering them was black plastic trash cans with wood mulch up around there trunks, same thing with a sago and it survived while the Trachys all died.

So come spring we will know for sure if layering works.
