How old is your daughter? As she may be approaching the age for a more grown up space showing off her taste ?

My 2cents would be yellow or green yellow (citrus colors) with depth would work well with dark furniture. However if she is aspiring to more sophistication ....greys....

by the way my daughter is 13... she is an eighth grader.

Does she still like the large flower picture on the wall?
Does she want the room to be more dark-shaded and sophisticated? Go grey. If she wants it to be more light and bright, you could go a light green color. It tends to blend into the background and you almost regard it as white. Especially with bright reds or pinks in the bedding- like the picture

I'd go light light grey or bright white. Both would look good with the furniture and both would let the pops of color really pop. Plus in 5 years when she changes her mind again the background will be ready for anything.

I think where we get stumped is with the dark furniture....ebony color. She wants to carry this room to college. She loves color would even do accent wall color. Obviously we would change her window treatment, but the furniture needs to stay. She would like to keep walls toned down.

I think a muted wall colour a grey with violet accent to it with a feature wallpaper to break it up , some nice strong coloured accessories as these can always be changed at a later date as she grows.

I suggest painting the walls green or blue to go with what she already has in the space & applying wall decals. Attaching a photo for inspiration-color and decal. Good luck! [houzz=]

Go to the paint store and see what your daughter likes. She is not a baby and is old enough to choice what she likes with of course following your guidelines

Definitely agree that she should be involved in selecting the color. I'd go with a color that is flattering to her skin tone - warm or cool - as teenage girls spend a lot of time in their rooms + color will reflect on her when she's looking in a mirror. Pick a color that she loves, just nudge her towards a sophisticated version of the color - her taste will change a lot between 13 and 20. My daughter loves green, but at 13 it was bight kelly and now in college she likes a more nuanced green, like Natalie's example.

If you did an oversized black and white damask wallpaper (something hip) you could do your color in rugs, drapes, bedding, pillows...and she could change her mind about color direction every couple of years!

I agree with an accent wall. It can be either a bold color, a wall paper, or a striped wall. I would definitely change out the drapes for a pattern that is still colorful, but more grown-up. Paint the rest of the walls cool grey, blue or green-think sea glass. Then, I would hang that piece of artwork with inspirational sayings on whatever wall she wants. Also,hang that large mirror on the wall that it is leaning against. The room would also look more grown up if it was better organized. I love the pouf! I would probably buy another one, and put them at the foot of her bed. Then, just add some accent colors through decorative pillows, a new area rug, and drapery. Her room is big- so maybe there is room for a small seating area with a side table and 1 or 2 small slipper chairs? Just remember to stick to what she loves and go for it! Good luck.

If the bed is staying on that wall, I'd suggest painting one feature wall (behind the headboard) in an accent color such as the blue-greens or turquoise she loves or a soft butter yellow. Also paint the crawl space door & trim the same color as the wall. The other walls could be neutral or lite gray to help create a focal point toward the head of the bed and to allow the other accent colors to pop. The flower art is fun & creative, although too small to really complement the width of the bed. If she doesn't want to move it, then add 2 more small square colorful art pieces. Hang one below the other right beside the larger flower art to make a larger grouping. Then make sure the entire grouping is centered over the bed.

One option could include black picture frames around the 3 art pieces to help coordinate the art pieces and create some balance with all the weight of the dark furniture. I think the drapes are fun & colorful, which could be changed as your daughter's taste evolves.

Another option would be to bring in more ivory/warm white into the room to balance all the dark furniture. I love Natalie's inspiration photo, so if you want that look, I'd suggest 3 ivory white walls plus the colored feature wall. Then the 3 picture frames could be ivory white as in Natalie's photo or silver as shown below. Ivory white bedding with bright pops of accent colors would look great. I've used Ikea's Bubble style throws (very stretchy) to cover an entire single bed/daybed plus create the cover for the body pillow shams and it looks so fun! See photo below (scroll over to enlarge). Everyone who walked into this bedroom immediately fell in love with it. The soft butter yellow walls provided a cheerful backdrop for the brighter colors to pop, which could also work beautifully in your daughter's room. A more edgy light limon color could also work (if that's what I'm seeing in the drapes).

There are thousands of possibilities, so enjoy the process of zeroing in on what you love the most and then try to keep in mind that you need to balance the dominance of all the weighty dark furniture.

ok, so we are going to try "Laguna Blue" BM for the accent wall (wall behind bed) and a grey or "Paper White" BM for the other walls. My question now is: how do I paint area a & b? Do I paint them the accent color?

Nice choices! Whichever color you use will make the coordinating wall look wider. If the grey wall is the short wall, I'd paint the bump out grey to match - it will blend into one long span.

I wouldn't paint a and b separate colors for two reasons. First, the seam would be on the outside corner where it will be very obvious if the line where they meet isn't perfect. If they meet on an inside corner, the seam will be hidden in a shadow.

Second, because it will make the bump-out more obvious rather than less.

the door to the bedroom is opposite the accent wall -- left side of the picture. so if you are walking into the room you visually see "a" and the accent wall first. Would that change your suggestion of painting the bump out grey? thanks....

I would paint both b and a the gray!
