uses for hormones in trees

has anyone heard of using rooting hormone as a means of treating damaged or weakened plants or trees?

When I did a search on " in Google I came across a book in 1953 where someone in Pasadena, Ca used this kind of a technique in an ailing cherry orchard.

Did this technique pass the test of time and is it still used?

From a look at this book it seems that indoleacetic acid was inserted into the trunk and corked into place...
