Hydroseeding has a water holding agent, seed, some have enzymes, etc and nothing else. If you want to develop a good reputation, mix in decomposed organic matter in the top 6 inches of the soil before hydroseeding.

Sand does not have any organic material to it. Very little will survive in it. Generally, we call for at least 150mm (6") of topsoil (containing approximately 4-10% organic material) for laying down sod. You could try amending the sand with organic material, but good soil is more than just that.

My advice is to stick to building houses. You don't know enough to do any landscaping. Most builders don't. You seem to be only concerned whether or not the grass will sprout. Pity the poor homeowner who has to maintain that grass in a sandpit.
Sub it out and make allowence for topsoil.

botann, have a heart. Times are tough and construction folks, in particular, are finding themselves scrambling to pay the bills with any work they can get.

I would pass on adding soil on top. Placing a finer textured soil on top of sand can lead to drainage problems. I would stick with Petzold's recommendation for organic matter down to 6 inches. Just make sure it's nitrogen stable and use about 5 cubic yard per 1000 sq. ft. or so. To help with establishemnt, it wouldn't hurt to till in a complete fertilizer with the o.m. and put a little slow release nitrogen in the hydroseed mix. Another thing to consider is that we're going into winter not too long from now. I don't know what weather is like in Louisiana but Bermuda grass is a warm weather species and doesn't establish real well when the weather cools. Just something you might want to point out to whoever it is that's holding you to the specs. Mentioning it up front might get you off the hook later if the weather gets cool during establishement and the Bermuda poops out.

You could also try a compost blanket. The process is somewhat similar to hydroseeding, and can be very inexpensive. The EPA has more info on their website.
