Pepper Pix

I went to a nearby chili festival this morning. You could pick all that would fit into one of those medium gift-size paper bags for only $5. They didn't see me coming!

Lets see your pepper photos!

You're welcome NJA. I remember seeing your blog a couple weeks ago. It's a good one and I have it bookmarked now.

Ken - Let's see, I made a Poblano Chicken casserole.

The Hungarian Wax and a couple Jalapenos went into a big pot of venison/pork loin chili. Half frozen, the other half canned.

With some of the Habaneros I made Peach/Habanero Jam and Habanero Gold Jam. I have a few of the Habs left.

The Cheyennes were hickory smoked, dehydrated, and ground.

The Thai chilies will be going into a stirfry later this week.

Whatever was left was bagged and frozen for later use, mostly Jalapenos for Nachos.

I did save a few seeds but it's going to be a real crapshoot if they grow out true. All the different peppers varieties were grown in single rows side by side. Most of the sweet peppers were at one end of the plot, but others like the Rio Grande Jalapenos had the hot and sweet varieties grown right next to each other, with a row of Hot Giante Jalapenos on the other side. Should be interesting next year!

Let's see those photos people! :)

One of my two loaded Hab plants.

    NAGA!

my poor hab plant...only set two peppers...keeps dropping dozens of buds a week =(

    my mystery hybrid plant

    holyyy molyyy

    anchos

thai plant a couple weeks ago...theyve all since turned red, been picked, and spit out twice as many new green pods

    mucho nacho

anaheims which ive had a serious problem with rot or sunscald with...i cant tell which

    red hot cherrys

    serranos

    hot banana

and these have no peppers yet...but im hopeful!!

two devils tongues...the first one got burnt up real bad in the beginning of the season...so i ordered another one not being sure if the original would make it....well the original bounced back and is looking pretty good...then last week the replacement got burnt to hell =/

three naga morich's they sent together...i didnt bother splitting them up...all 3 growing in a pot

recently the chocolate bhut jolokia has been taking off quite nicely

and finally bid daddy bhut...just now spitting out flowers

Nice looking plants Juicyj! Although I think your naga's, bhut, and habs would benefit from some planttone...stuff works F#$king wonders on peppers like them. Scroll up and take a look at my picture of my hab plant (or for pictures of my other plants go here http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/pepper/msg071918203449.html ), all i use on them are 1/2 strength miracle gro once every other month and plant tone worked into the top inch of soil every month. Bone meal i hear is good too but i haven't tried it.

Dave, that stuff sounds great. What do you use the jam on? We made some hab jam about a month ago and I am trying to figure out how to use it!

Juicy, your plants look great! Where did you order the tongues and the nagas from? I am growing them from seed but they grow so slowly...!

Suppose I should tell you why I think so... look at your leaves. See how they have a bubbled appearance to them? That is caused by a lack of calcium..which is also necessary for proper (and abundant) fruit development. I had the same issue with my naga plant and within 2 weeks of adding plant tone (or again bone meal) to the pot, all the branches grew out by 2 inches and flowers sprouted from everywhere.

Toast, biscuits, pork chops, and my favorite - egg rolls. My local grocer sells them frozen - heat and eat. Same with the Hot Peach too, btw. :)

pyro...yes sir i have noticed the calcium defiency...about two weeks ago i bought some cheapo bone meal for about 7 bucks and sprinkled a small handfull around most of the plants....alot of them responded...but the super hots and the hab didnt seem to....you can kind of see around the hab about a week ago i put a little bit more around it....still doesnt seem to be doing much...so i dont know

whats this planttone you speak of? im willing to try anything at this point.....that hab sets and drops probably close to fifty buds a week...over the past few months ive watched it do this over and over while just these two lame peppers are all its givin me
so im open to any and all suggestions

as i said its the same for the superhots...ive added the bonemeal to no avail

pepperdog....i believe i got at least the devils tongues from hirts...i dont remember if thats where i got the naga or not

yea i just checked i got it from hirts...theyre sellin seed for like 4 bucks or a plant for 5....and they grew VERYYYYY slow for me too...theyve actually just started to do anything at all in the past few weeks...before that they looked the same as i got them like 3 months ago

Here is a link to the plant tone... you can also try tomato tone but I have never used it. http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com/product/espoma-plant-tone-5-3-3-5-lb-bag

If you have already tried bone meal, what zone/state do you live in? if the plant and its roots are getting too hot the blossoms will drop, you might want to put it in the shade for a little while if its getting full sun on a hot day, especially if its sitting on concrete or other heat holding surface.

i live in idaho...its been getting up to the mid 90's to 100...when its above 93 or 94 or so i usually leave them in the shade...and theyre on concrete till about 2 or 3 then i move them onto mulch for afternoon sun

Might try leaving them on a spot that has constant shade for a bit and see what happens, i doubt its too much N..since the leaves are a bit of a pale green so I am at a loss for what it is unless your over watering them or your soil ph is off so they cant access the calcium.

yea i could try that...but you dont think they need at least like 6 hours of sun to bud or set fruit?
im not sure this is my first year so im very new to all this

a bit of a pale green? is that good or bad?

yea its really confusing to me....i try real hard not to over fertilize....i hit is with some seaweed magic every month or two...and ive hit it with bonemeal once or twice when i started to notice the calcium defeciency and thats about it

as far as watering i water them all differently since theyre different plants in different sized pots....when they start wilting bad i water them...the hab...the serranos...and a couple that are in smaller pots wilt pretty quick in the heat so they get a little water maybe twice a day...in the morning and again in the evening when they start to wilt again....as for the rest they only get watered when the soil drys out...which is about every other day or every 3 days
ive been trying real hard not to over water...but when they dry out and wilt really bad i have to you know

    so yea...i dunno

If your habs and serranos are wilting that fast you probably have a pot that is too small for them making them root bound so they wont grow or flower much (plus if its hot a small pot cooks the roots easier).

Peppers respond to light, not hours of direct sunlight to flower. Even if they are in the shade for the entire day they will still get the light necessary to flower.

I would still choose to repot them to a large pot and see what happens.

Juicyj, sunscald, excessive wilting, and pale leaves are all signs of too much sun and/or heat. Now your leaves aren't really that pale, but they will darken up if you'll give them some shade.

It also looks like your plants are on concrete? That could be another reason you're getting so much wilting. And with so much wilting they are likely too stressed to set fruit.

I would give them some afternoon shade. Otherwise they look great. The leaves should flatten as the bonemeal has more time to work, and the fruit will set when they're good and ready. :)

Still waitin for some ripe fruit. Can't wait to try them.

pyro...that very well could be true...i would guess the hab is in about a 3 gallon container...though thats just a guess...and the serranos are in about the same container...though that has two plants in it...i kind of ran out of containers...ill try and get a bigger one to repot the habs....thank you for all your help man! i appreciate it

medcave....yea thats kind of what pyro was saying...i think im going to leave them in the shade during the afternoon for a few weeks and see what happens...also i just hit some of them with yet another bonemeal treatment today....we'll see what happens!

Careful about adding too much bonemeal... too much of a good thing can be bad.

yeaaaa...thats what i figured....but i also figured if its obviously not getting enough...maybe a little more wont hurt...i didnt overdue it...just a tad bittle
