Your nursery must be responsive to customer needs. My nursery was geared to the wholesale market, which meant that I had to be in tune to what THEIR customers wanted.

I also became very active in several professional organizations and attended as many conferences and plant expos as I could fit in. Doing so connects you to the grower's world outside your own back yard.

I had one friend who owned a successful retail garden center business. Besides all of the professional journals, he suscribed to Southern Gardening. Located in the deep South, he swore that he was swamped with requests for whatever plants that the iconic magazine featured that month.

In summary, know who your customer is and find out what they want to buy. In some markets and in some kinds of businesses, you can guide customers to new, unfamiliar plants. That's always fun but be sure that you have a compelling plant and are a good sales person.
