I use a well drained mix of peat, perlite & vermiculite... This way I get good aeration & can easly grow the cutting on in the mix till ready to transplant with a good good mass.

I use 50/50 peat and perlite. Also, for roses and a few other things, I like to use soil conditioner, straight from the bag.

i personally like rockwool but it is a hydroponic growing media and you have to add your own nutrients. very good air-water ratio though.

otherwise, a peat/sand mixture sometimes with added peralite or vermiculite.

sphagnum peat moss, perlite, vermiculite was what I was told was best for rose cuttings.

Sand and peat 50/50

regular potting mix

When I had a greenhouse and did controlled experiments for my amusement I almost always came to the conclusion that clean sharp sand, aka silica sand, sold at building supply places for use by the tile people was the best. But -- note -- I was just doing rooting experiments. If I were going to go on and grow the plant I would transplant very early after I got roots into some of the mediums mentioned above.
