if they are out in the heat, bring them in until they root.

Generally when I stick a dief in soil w/o rooting it in water, the outside leaves do die, but the inside leaves don't. They root pretty quickly and start putting on new leaves.

Sometimes, if your plan to root them in soil, lay them out for a day or two and let the end harden off.

You can even take 3 inch pieces w/o leaves, lay them out for about 3 days to harden off, then stick one end in the dirt about 1/3 of the way.

I remove all the leaves & root as plantbabies describes. That way they can put all their energy into rooting. Thanks for the water tip - I will try that method also.
