Dividing penstemon

I just bought a penstemon, huskers red. It is a very full container. It looks like several plants, but very entwined. Any suggestions about how to divide? Knife? Tease apart (don't think possible). I am anxious to redo a section of my garden but will wait if this is a bad time.

will want to delay division till fall when plant dormant.

I **sometimes** find that if I wash the dirt off the roots of intwined plants, and while everything is still wet, it is easier to tease the plants apart.

You end up with bare-root plants, but that isn't often a problem.
