My experience is no sun for cuttings not rooted. Well rooted cuttings of most plants can tolerate weak or indirect sun. A very few plants will provide cuttings able to survive almost any abuse. Al

If you're taking cutting from a mature tree or a herb or a cactus it would be easier to say. There are lots of techinques- putting them in sand and then bags, using rooting hormone, rooting them in water, drying them in the sun.

That would seem to say that they do not really need it;
so, I am comforted that I have not sometimes squandered opportunities for
faster growth of roots.

I think that cuttings have a need for good light, but they will not do well under direct sun. It is too harsh, too drying, too hot. Too everything.

Of course there will be exceptions, such as succulents who don't seem to mind how they are treated, but I am speaking generally.

In my opinion well rooted cuttings will grow faster in weak amounts of sun that do not overpower the plant. It is a judgement call, sorry for the confusion. Al
