I use cuttings of this years growth taken August thru Sept. the cuttings are taken with a heel from a side branch. Then apply 0.8% IBA (rooting hormone) stick in well drained soil & mist .. Use bottom heat. takes 30-100 days to root.

I noticed georgez5il said to use bottom heat can you please explain what this means. I am currently trying to propagate osmanthus fragrans.

set the container on a heating pad, or radiator etc. you are adding heat to the bottom of the container to increase the soil temp......(which is much more important than air temp)

I think the reason Osmanthus does not start as high a percentage as most cuttings is the tip cuttings are very thin with little reserve to start roots. Using a heel as george suggests will help but not as much as bottom heat. Al
