Bill if you go to one of the larger nurseries, that sell to landscaping companies, you can buy hugh bags of perlite for $19.99. Bags that are at least 4-5 ft tall. For the folks in the Texas I buy mine at Turners Nursery in Corpus Christi. Bill have you ever tried to use turface? I mix half and half, turface and perlite. The perlite breaks down but the turface will not. I get it for $12 a hugh bag at John Deer Landscape. I did not have any success with the egg method, but I planted mine in the ground, that might have been why. I hear a lot of folks have great success, but noticed they are all using pots. I heard that Styrofoam is great to root plumeria seeds. Barbra

Barbra i get my perlite at home depot for $17 for a very large bag.I have been doing plants for alost 30 years.I have also done some hybridizing on amarylis and had one of the first crosses on the butterfly amarylis. I recently purchased about 30 more for this purpose also trying lilies this year for crosses I also purchased some of the bombarea which are relatives of the alstromeria.
My wife is from the philippines and they call the desert rose " bangkok plumeria" and they grow them inj the ground..A lot of my plants are on my facebook page under bill kemp thanks to my wife the shutterbug.

Bill, we are not able to buy the big bags at Lowes or Home Depot here. You are lucky, I have to travel 37 miles to Corpus to get the big bags of perlite. In San Antonio only one place Rainbow Gardens has it but it is $5 more than Corpus. I was told about it from John Belcar the president of the plumeria society in Corpus Christi Tx. Before then then I just bought the little bags from Lowes, for $4.29 I don't remember who told us about getting turface at John Deer, but whoever it was Thank you, I am now able to grow plants like torch lilies, and crab claws because of it.
