I must stop

Instead of getting rid of some of my plants before the end of the season I've been buying or trading for more. I already have 64 rooted plumies, granted 2/3's are first year seedlings but they still take up space. I managed to give away or trade about 40 seedlings earlier in the summer. I just bought 3 more rooted plumies that should be here within about a week. A Kauka Wilder, a Pu'u Kahea and an Emerson's Pink Nova. The seller is also throwing in a rooted Aztec Gold. I've also received a number of cuttings from a couple people here. In addition to the plumerias I've bought a number of other tropical plants and trees. This is crazy. I think I need to find some sort of 12 step program for plantaholics. My husband was already giving me a hard time because I told him that I needed greenhouse space at the farm for about 400 plants, now it's even more. You might be seeing me and my plants on the side of the road with a sign saying "will work for greenhouse space" lol

    Karyn,
I hear you..LOL Well I did not think I could grow seeds so I said no I will not try this... Ok that was before I started to see this tiny tiny green thing under one of my seeds that I have.... YEAHHHHHHHH I cant wait for it to sprout up...
So I was just one ebay and won myself another 70 seeds from 2 bids.... 50 mixed and 20 lemon drop... Hey I am going to need help with this coming into winter... Like how do I keep tiny plants over winter??? Do they stay up top floor or in the basement with the big plants??? Do I use lights to keep alive or a heat mat???? I really am thankful for all your info....
Take care and STOP BUYINGGGGG LOLOL

Susan I'm going to use heat mats and grow lights for my seedlings. I don't think that they can handle a dormant period until the second year. I figured that I wouldn't have a great germination rate with plumeria seeds......wrong! I had almost 100% sprout and ended up with something like 110 little plumies. I didn't want to get rid of so many but there is no way that I have the room for all of them. I keep thinking that the ones I gave away will have the nice blooms.lol If they would get flowers within one season I would have made room. I've kept almost all of my brug crosses and will give some of those away after I see the first couple flushes next season.

    karyn,
What is a brug? Also where do you get a heatmat? I have called all the local places and no one has them.. I kinda sorta looked on the web but I must say I really dont know what I am looking for :-( Ok so I have vistors for the winter in the house ,.... I will have to bring up the extra table (big) and put in front of the double doors so they can get good light..... everything grows and grows...LOL
    Thanks Karyn,

Susan you can get seed mats at some nurseries or online. They provide bottom heat and are usually used to start seeds. A brug is a brugmansia or angel trumpet, a kind of flowering plant. You want the grow lights to extend the amount of daylight even if you have sufficient light from the windows.

Hey Susan, I just checked on Ebay for heat mat, under the "Home and Garden" catagory, and there are quite a few heat mats listed there. I don't really know if the prices are good, never priced one before, but, you can find some there.

    Karyn,
Because IÂm an enabling troublemaker, I am submitting the link below for pop up greenhouses that assemble in minutes with no tools. Check out the one that is 8Â high by 9Â wide and deep. Several can be zipped together to make one structure. This may be a way to deal with your underestimate of the greenhouse space required for your plants.

Here is a link that might be useful: Instant Greenhouses

Thanks for the link. We have 2 greenhouses at our farm but due to fuel costs last year my husband is only going to heat part of one. Can you believe that the plants for the business are taking precedence over my personal collection! lol We've been kicking around the idea of putting up a small house in the backyard. I've been looking at different companies but never considered Home Depot. Their prices are really good. Thanks again. I know I've posted these before but here's a pic of our larger greenhouse. You think he'd give me enough space, but no : (

I am guessing your husband is in the nursery business. Tell him plumeria are "hot" right now and that seeing your personal plants may result in his clients asking him to start supplying them with plumeria plants. You wouldnÂt believe the prices the nurseries in my area charge for them.

The farm is a side business for us. We have 10 acres and 2 greenhouses where we grow flowers & herbs for cutting. My husband's "real" job is also flower related. He's been in the wholesale floral business for about 30 years. Unfortunately plumeria plants and many of my other favorites except orchids aren't profitable in this area. He sells cut flowers and provides plants to the interior plantscape designers, (the stuff you see in offices and building lobbies). Besides that very few plumeria are offered for wholesale, about the only one that's widely available to him out of Fl is Bridal Bouquet, which I don't particularly like. It figures that practically everything that I grow he doesn't carry : (
