File size question

18 years ago

I just posted on another thread and since then I wondered about file sizes. I wonder if y'all would mind checking these 2 pics and let me know if you see a difference.

{{gwi:1205152}}
and the same one again

{{gwi:1205153}}
I reduce the file size so my work is faster and I can store more pics at the album site. I don't see a see a difference though one file is 486 kb and the other is 120 kb. How do they compare to you?

    Good morning Dave!

    You can see a very subtle reduction in picture quality in the second one. Probably that is made more apparent by the very nice quality of the first photo. If they were not side by side I would probably say they were both fine. The second one is just a bit faded and does not pop like the first photo.

    However as they are both shots of your gorgeous yard you really just cannot go wrong:)

    Thanks Kate :) I should have asked what resolution your monitor is set at too. Ours is set at 1024 x 768. Maybe it is my old eyes :) Don't know the resolution of them anymore.

  • 18 years ago

    I agree with Kate...VERY subtle difference in color but they are both the same SIZE. Your garden is really gorgeous Dave! You were the inspiration for some of my roses and alyssum this year! I am just beginning to grow hybrid teas and english roses. Thanks for letting all of us enjoy your beautiful bounty! April

    Ditto what Kate said. Not enough difference to justify the much larger file size, unless you were going to print it or something else than showing on the web. IMHO, of course.

    Dave my resolution is set the same as yours. It is such a hard job having to keep looking at your garden photos for you. But I will soldier on if I must:)

    I notice on the 2nd picture that it's a bit pixelated. Compare the foliage on the rose to the left of the yellow rose in each picture. I think the fineness of the allysum gets lost a bit.

    I'd be interested to see how an upclose shot differs.

    Dave - Ditto what Kate said. First pic is a bit crisper.
    Both are gorgeous.

    Hi digger, I am very computer illiterate and wanted to ask ya a couple questions. The first picture by the way on my computer is sharper than the second. Very pretty as usual. Anyway, the one that is a sharper picture is in an album with fewer pictures in it? What do I need to set the pictures on to make them the size of yours? Is that what takes you so long to pull up my pictures? Or was it because silly me put so many on the one thread? See I told you I was illiterate when it came to computers. Plus when it comes to posting pictures. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Judy

    Hi Dave,
    Your garden still looks spectacular !!
    Really a site to behold.

    Thank you everyone :) I thought the reduced size might be more noticable to others so I figured I would ask.

    Kate, I appreciate you being such a trooper to help out :)

    April, my pleasure.

    Kathy, I use the full size when I print up calendars and such. I'm still a bit paranoid about having high resolution pics stolen so the smaller ones make me feel better too :) Wait, it isn't paranoia if they are really out to get me.... LOL

    Eric, after having pics stolen back at the turn of the century... I always reduce the bloom photos and label them to make it harder for thieves. Just to see.... I haven't uploaded a high res pic in a longgg time.
    1st = saved at 100 = 246kb
    2nd = saved at 85 = 73kb
    3rd = saved at 70 = 52kb
    {{gwi:1205154}}
    {{gwi:1205155}}
    {{gwi:1205156}}

    I'll delete these from the album soon but I'm curious now too. Not worried about anyone stealing that one :)

    Terry, we are having a warm spell. It has been in the 40s and 50s. Noticed new growth on some of the roses today *sigh* it is too early :)

    Judy, the pics are just saved as different qualities. The first yard pic is full sized. There are options when I save the pics. The 1st was saved at 100 (full sized). The second was saved at 65. That reduces the file size but leaves the pic the same dimensions. Does that make sense? Lord have mercy.... you need to post a lot more pics in each thread to come close to what I usually post. I'm about the worst one here. Don't worry about it. You did just fine. The problem is all on my end of the line. The barbed wire we have for lines must be getting rusty.... ain't going for it??? I could get faster service here if I wasn't such a skinflint :) I want to have as many pics as I can get on the space available at the album site too. Have about 2500 there now.

    This is fantastic :) You can't imagine the smile I got when I saw your name. Gotta run. Say hi to Eddie for me and ask him if he has seen any of those monster spidermites lately! I can't believe it.....

  • 18 years ago

    OK DAVE, What on earth is a skinflint??? Judy

  • 18 years ago

    You brought back such a funny and pleasant memory of an old posting. Eddie said to send you this for old times sake.

  • 18 years ago

    Hi Digger,

    On the close-ups there appears to be no difference between the 100 and 70 picture, so that's good. Hmmm, hopefully my photography will get to the point where somebody might even think about stealing them :)

    Judy, a skinflint is another word for "cheapskate" or "tightwad"...no offense Dave!

    Eric

  • 18 years ago

    I can't tell any difference between the two pictures. Although I have a nuerological disorder that makes my pupils twitch!! :)

    Carol

  • 18 years ago

    Thanks again everyone :)

    Judy, what Eric said, LOL. You can add miser, pennypincher....

    Eric, no offense taken :) I take pride in it. Love to haggle with merchants and get the price down on anything I buy.
    I take it as a compliment when someone takes one of our pics but I do want credit for them.

    Carol, that doesn't sound like much fun. Does it interfere with your sight very much?

    Deb says Hey SueBelle and Eddie :) She also said "ew, yuck" when she saw the spider(mite). She still hates spiders. We were talking about you two a couple weeks ago wondering how you were doing. Timing of this is great.
    {{gwi:1205158}}
    That was one of the pics I was playing with at the time we got talking about you guys. Deb did NOT like the close ups of the little critter :)
    Hope everything is getting better for y'all. I know it seems crazy. For a long while.... Every time I was tired after work.... I would think 'at least I'm not in Eddie's shoes'. Wondered if he ever got any time off. Wondered if you had any help since we knew Eddie was busy getting power back on.... LOL, we wondered a lot :) Can't say how tickled we are to see ya here!

  • 18 years ago

    Thanks ya'll, I guess I can call my hubby a skinflint and he wouldn't have a clue. He would know though that I got it from one of you. Your yard sure doesn't show that your a skinflint digger. Always beautiful. Your sorceress's spells are working great. lol!!! Judy

  • 18 years ago

    Hi Dave and Deb! I only see the one picture and it is awesome! Your garden is as beautiful as ever! I love the way you have laid out your garden! Wonderful Roses, Clematis and your lovely Alyssum!!! I look forward to seeing your pictures this year, too! Missy

    This is great! 1st SueBelle and now you :) Feels like old home week. I deleted the pics at the album site once replies stopped a while.

    You didn't tell me that Candy Cane was cane hardy here :) Canes only had tip damage on them last spring. It is looking like a monster this spring. I didn't have to worry about CC getting overgrown where I planted it. Visitors are always amazed when I tell them a friend in southern California sent it to us.
    {{gwi:1205161}}
    I think it will put on a spectacular show the coming season. CC seemed to get its feet under it last season.

    Deb says Hi! We have missed seeing you and your pics :)

  • 18 years ago

    LOL, seeing you here spun me and I forgot to say thank you :) There are some more yard pics at our album page if you have some time and nothing to do.
