Problem with Memphis King

Memphis King

I bought a Memphis King last year and it is performing as promised. It has just finish a beautiful flush of blooms and has new buds again

It has a new basal shoot that has grown thick and healthy to a point. It has grown about six or seven inches past the last five leaflet set with only the stems past that point with no leaflets attached.

What kind of problem does this represent?

Wait a few days and see if it's just having a bout of wide internodal spacing (the amount of space between the leaflet sets) or some other kind of strange growth spurt. If it doesn't set a bud at the end, then it's a blind shoot. You can trim this back and new canes will start which should set a bud.

Diane, Thanks, your advice was right on. The cane in question is leafing out after a bit of spacing as you suggested.
