The buried base is pretty much useless. This time in their life span, they'll put all the plant energy into shooting a flower stalk and putting out seeds.

But, dig some up, and see how many layers of stuff you'll have to peal off before you get to something that looks good enough to eat. I got one out of 5 the other day.

Or you can use as greens right where they are at. Or you can play a little, let them bloom, harvest the seeds and try your luck with your own seeds next year.

Thank you so much for the information! I'm going to use a few for green onions and let some grow to form seed. That will be a first for me and I'm excited to see what happens!!

I bought a buncha long-daylight onions last year, and they never formed bulbs. They're up and about this spring, but eh..... My new slips are coming next week, and I have gobs of shallot greens I grew from seed, and I ordered a couple bunches of leeks.

I want to eat some green fresh stuff soooooo bad now...
