I've had more success on my south-facing covered porch, because I can see them and not forget to water them. I forget to water ones in the garage. Unfortunately, my range vents out into the garage, so it can get warm in there and they dry out fast. And I forget to check in on them. Porch, I can see them and check the watering and if it gets too windy, then I put them into the garage.

Tenor_peggy who used to post here, watered the pots well, then put the pots in black platic bags, covering the plants but just folding the open ends over, not sealing or tying off the tops. She was able to get the soil to stay moist through the winter using this method.
