Can't wait for the bush shots. Just planted a PP bareroot yesterday and have read other posts that said she wants to be a thorny, floppy climber. Any suggestions on how to keep her trimmed as a shrub? How big does she get? Your pic is lovely. Hope mine blooms this year.

Yes she whats to be a climber but I found a way to tame her. I bought the thicker square wood stakes and keep her canes staked until they became woody and that makes her frame. I pruned her lightly every year. But over this past winter I took her back from over 7 ft high to about 3 1/4 high. I pruned her like a shrub rose. She is back to about 5 1/2 ft high and all the new canes are staked and more buds than I can count. I have had her for about 5 yrs now and by next spring she should have a full enough frame to support any new canes comming up from the middle with little to no staking.
The rain has stopped so I am going to let her open a little bit more and should have pic of her by this weekend.

p.s. a great DVD on how to prune a shrub rose is "Pruning Shrub Roses and the Glory of Mottisfont". It can be ordered from Ashdown Roses and boy did I learn a lot from it, plus it has great eye candy.

As promised. Here is my Prairie Princess as a large shrub (6ft fence). And she is no where near done with blooming, all through and on top of her is still a mass of buds I will post more as she get more color.

That bush shot is so pretty.I just wish the picture was a little bigger so I could see it better. I clicked on it thinking it would get bigger, but it didn't...haha not perfect eyesight so need bigger pictures for my old eyes. Thanky you for sharing it.

Hi Liz - thanks for the big pic. Mine is a grafted bareroot from Pickering that I planted last week. Hope she turns out as well as yours. How old is your PP? And you just keep her shaped as a shrub and tied to wooden stakes, right? I planted here so she has plenty of room to grow. Hope she takes off and grows well.

I have had PP for about 5 years and started to stake her when I started to see her try to "spread her wings" so to speak. You may have to play around and experiment but it will work. This past winter was the first time I did the hard prune using the shrub pruning method, before that I barely touched her. It may be a litte different in your part of the country.

You are quite welcome. PP and my American Beauty Climber were my first roses, but PP is my favorite. Now my tiny back yard is filling up with roses, but there is always room for more :)
