Hi gang,

I was strolling in an old neighborhood near my house this weekend and came across this rose bush growing by the sidewalk. I went back later in the day to snap some shots. As you can see, it's a beautiful pale pink blossom and has a rich old rose scent. I tried to get pictures of all the important characteristics. Otherwise, the bush is about four feet tall and upright, but it's not really in the best of growing conditions. The buds aren't really mossy (see pics) but are slightly fuzzy and smell like resin when handled. I'm guessing it's a once bloomer, but can't say for sure.

I hope to root a cutting down the road, so knowing the variety name would be useful.

You have found a lovely example of Banshee. The yellow green roundish leaves and the distinctive receptacle are the keys to the ID on this rose. For me, it roots well from cuttings, and it will be a great addition to your garden. It is one of my favorite roses!

Wow, a Banshee found on Long Island! If possible, take a few suckers. When well cared for, this rose will get huge and be covered in blooms in June. I have two and love them.

How interesting to find old roses like that. Have the experts ever figured out it's real name? I have come across great old plants of Great Western, Maxima, Suaveolens and Maiden's Blush. They are fairly common here. The unidentified mystery roses are far and few between here, though there still might pop up one or two :-)

Last year I sent an unamed china rose for grafting. It was found many years a go by a lady and given to the local arboretum. Some think it might be Rival de Paestum, I don't think it ever was confirmed for shore.
