Name That Rose!

Identify rosebush

Hi, hoping you can help me identify my rose bush. My husband and I bought our home a year ago and it was just a small plant with no flowers, and we didn't even realize it was a rose. But he cut it back last fall and added some mulch around the base, and this spring- WOW! The flowers are smallish, only about 2.5" diameter, and they are clustered together. One part of the bush is climbing against our house but there are no blooms on that. There is no fragrance and the plant really doesn't seem very "rose-like," except for the thorns and leaves. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

A pretty red climbing rose named "Dr. Huey" was introduced in the early 1900s and chosen by nurserymen as a rootstock on which to graft less vigorous varieties of roses.

The rose grafted on top may die, but Dr. Huey rarely does. I'm pretty sure that's what you have. We have a couple of plants at our home too, from the former owner's garden. They give a nice spring display and so we keep them.

If the true color is a brighter red than your photo shows, it could also be Champlain.
