Does it look like Gloire des Rosomanes? The thread entitled "mystery/gallica hybrid?" on this forum rang a bell with me. In that thread, there is a link to Gloire des Rosomanes on helpmefind. I don't grow this rose, so I don't know if yours is it. I do know that Gloire des Rosomanes is a very old rose that could well be growing in zone 6 NY. Try a google search for it. Here's a link to a picture, also. It is a tall shrub with 3-4" flowers.

That is abolutely not 'Gloire de Rosomanes': the foliage and cane style are all wrong for that. This is probably the infamous 'Dr. Huey'. If it does not repeat bloom then I think my ID is correct. In that case, get thee a shovel and remove the thing. It is of no value to you.

the shape of the bush makes me think its Dr Huey also. Dr H is a once blooming climber commonly used as understock for grafted hybrid teas. The hybrid tea dies off in cold climates because the graft was not planted below ground level then the rootstock rose sends up canes on its own. Dr H is moderately BS prone and has little to no repeat bloom so there are much better red climbers out there. On the other hand, it will survive your winters with no die back. If you like it, keep it but maybe transplant it to a less than prominent position in the yard so you notice it when in bloom and don't notice the ugly spotted foliage the rest of the summer.

Oh shoot, I"m disappointed if this is a dr. huey. Does dr. huey have 18 petals? I'm definitely not seeing any new buds so I'm thinking, sadly, that you are right about it. Now the rose down at my beach house that we think is a dr huey has one very large thick cane, almost like a tree, and then canes that come from the ground. The blooms on my beach house rose are much larger (to my eye) than the one at home in NY, but it LOOKS exactly like a dr huey, which is why I thought this one at my house at home was something different or more interesting anyway. So looking at these photos at the NJ shore house, and the ones above from my home in NY do you think they are the same or different?
