Name That Rose!

This old rose doesn't form a shrub

I acquired this rose about 30 years ago from a very elderly woman who said her family had it for as long as she could remember. She said it was known for its beautiful red buds, but they don't seem unusual in any way to me. It doesn't grow into any sort of shape, but pops up in single canes (suckers?) over a large area, as if it has underground runners. It blooms just once. Can you identify it? Thanks!

PS: Don't let the leaf at upper left confuse you. It's lemon balm. :-)

Your description of the bush's habit sounds just like the suckering behavior of some old roses, notably the Gallicas. Take a look at the drawings in the link below - does its growth habit resemble drawing #1?

Some other info would be helpful: Is it fragrant? Does it set hips (fruit)?

Thanks, Cecilia. My rose certainly resembles #1 more than #2, but I would say it doesn't come up quite as thickly as the illustration, and the canes aren't bent from the weight of the roses. No scent. I don't know about the hips. I've had the rose for nearly 30 years...you'd think I'd remember! But I'll keep an eye on it.
