The foliage looks to me like it could be multiflora. Multiflora was planted as a climber in that era. There were selected cultivars which may differ from the common wild type, which of course was not yet common. Check for the fringed stipules.

Thank you, Michael and Patricia. You're likely right. The common multiflora I see up here in fields and along roads forms a dense mounded shrub, but I've never seen it climb so I was unsure. And I will have to check the stipules next visit I make down there, thanks.

Multiflora here can climb 30 feet.

Just to let you know, I talked to my son last night and he confirmed that his rose has fringed stipules. (He compared them with the excellent photo of a multiflora leaf on Ann's RRD web book.) He's a little disappointed but grateful to you for the identification. Thanks, Michael and Patricia.
