Chicago Peace?

I bought this rose a couple of days ago. It had not yet bloomed. The tag says Chicago Peace, but I don't think so? Any Ideas?

Please disregard the JB's already attacking the poor plant.

The paper label on the bush looks like it says "Mea Nursery" ...and Mea is one of the top four brands known for Mislabeled rosebushes. (The other three are Paramount, Sexton, and Scotsman/DeWars.)

Your mystery-rose is most likely Peace - despite the current lack of pink-blush on the light-yellow blooms. I'm guessing its Peace because of the leaves and the fact that Peace is the rose I've most-often seen mislabeled as Chicago Peace.

So... unless you *want* to take a chance that the rose is Peace, return it immediately (while the light-yellow blooms are showing) to whatever store you bought it from. Personally, I'd show it to the manager of that store, to bring the issue of Mea's Mislabeled Roses to his/her attention.

    One last point:
In my personal experience, approximately 20-30% of paper-labeled rosebushes are mislabeled. (In comparison, metal-tagged roses are FAR less likely to be mislabeled.) I won't buy a paper-labeled rose unless it has blooms on it that CONFIRM its label-identification.

JohnReb, what do you think of labels on the pots? I seem to have had good luck with accuracy on those.

I agree that the rose could be Peace in a yellow mood.

Northspruce, the trustworthiness of labels on pots depends on the brand-name on the label.

As mentioned above, Mea Nurseries brand, Paramount, Scotsman/DeWars, and Sexton roses are extremely untrustworthy. The problem is made worse by the fact that those companies sometimes use an unfamiliar brand-name in the "large print" on the label. For example, this year at Lowe's, I saw "Beauty Queen" brand - but down in the small print you discover the dreaded name "Sexton Roses Inc, Tyler Texas.")

In particular, beware of the "generic" pot-labels which show a picture and a rose-name, but give no brand-name.

I do have some good news, though. "WalMart Gardens" brand potted roses seem to have comparatively few mislabelings. I read somewhere in the Rose Forum that Certified Roses is the supplier of WalMart Gardens brand potted roses. In my own experience, not a single one of my WalMart Gardens brand potted roses in the last two years was mislabeled.

Also, a Rose Discussion Forum poster says he works at Lowes and that LOWES BRAND potted roses are actually from Jackson & Perkins. He said the Lowes garden-workers remove the J&P labels from the shipments and replace them with Lowes-brand tags. BUT... Lowes also carries lots of generic-label potted roses ...so, make sure the potted rose's ID-label says Lowes-brand. (I don't mean the UPC sticker on the pot, I mean the cardlike-tag hanging on one of the rose's stems.)

By the way... Peace is actually a "mild" sunblusher rose - like Garden Party. Peace needs a certain amount of solar-ultraviolet exposure to get its pink blush. Apparently, Cherrykist's mystery-rose blooms opened inside a warehouse or a truck on its way to the store she bought it at.

Any bodybag rose's labeling is suspect. It's like throwing dice - we even called it "bodybag roulette" at one time around here.

That doesn't mean you won't get a nice rose ... just be prepared that it may not be what was on the label.
