It looks very much like Dr. Huey. Did you have a rose there at one time? It is likely that another rose was grafted to the Dr. Huey rootstock and died, but the roots still sent up new plants of Dr. Hury.

Very possible. I bought this house about four years ago, and never paid attention to the gardens until this year. Thanks for the ID, that looks like it! I like it...even if it is one used mostly for root stock.

is that rose red or purple? I have a passion for dark purples and have never seen a rose for sale called Dr. Huey. I had to search high and low for the rose fortuniana. I wonder if I could buy a Dr. Huey rose (if it is purple)?

It is one of my favorites, even though it is a once bloomer. I will have to get a picture tomorrow of the one I have started into a mimosa tree.

Michelle, It is a deep velvety red. If you are interested, I can try to start one for you from a cutting, I do not think they are generally "for sale".

Yes, it's more of a deep red...I'm not sure if it has any purple hue to it or not.

It is a dark red, once blooming, climber, prone to powdery mildew here in NJ. It isn't commonly for sale because it is so prevalent, it is the most common rootstock used in the US, and there is a lot of it growing around from plants that have suckered or reverted from the original variety to Dr. Huey. Vintage Gardens as it as a "custom root" which tickles me...
