Clematis rooting update

I thought I'd update the progress on the clematis cuttings. So using the tips you guys gave me, I used pure perlite, Clonex rooting compound, kept them in covered domes for a month, then open in a tray with bottom water, then after 7 weeks, today I checked them out.

So here they are in their little trays......

Potted them up in potential hanging baskets.....

And boy, do I have a lot of them......

So I put them in larger containers, angled at 45 degrees so the roots are barely an inch under the surface. The larger containers mean that I don't have to water as often, and hopefully the roots fill the things up. I an also hang them around the greenhouse all winter to grow, let the vines trail everywhere.

So, while I probably shouldn't count my vines before they grow, at least I'm on the way to creating that wall of clematis along the deer fence.

So, well, um, er....... Wooo Hoooo!!!!!!

VERY impressive, David! You are amazing with all the things you're able to root!

We'll be looking for a pic of your Wall of Purple in a couple years!

P.S. The apples and plums look pretty good too! :-)

P.P.S. Do you sell at a market? Ya know clematis in gallon pots sell for like $12 a pot--probably more by now! And that's just a single stem in the pot, about 18-24" long! I think I'm seeing a new source of income for you--after you get the fence covered, of course!

Well, I still have to keep them alive over the winter - easier said than done.

And now I have to find space in the greenhouse to bring in the harvest to cure for the winter. Squash and onions, then when the frost* starts up in a few weeks, the peppers and tomatoes. Let alone a bumper crop of apples.

This is so cool, David!! I have never once had a cutting root even though I have been gardening for years. But you have shown it really is possible :). Thanks for sharing your exciting news!

They look great! What a wonderful project. What kind of clematis are they? You are growing them on your deer fence? Out here the deer eat most clems, will you be spraying repellent?

Sorry for all the questions! I really love clematis and find your rooting project fascinating.

Boy, I hope the deer don't start eating them - I already have several well-established vines around the place and they haven't bothered them yet.

Most of these are Jackmanni. I've forgotten the name of the other two, one is a large, violet-colored variety, the other is a light blue, double-blossom; not much help :-)

I live on the corner of two county roads. I'm more worried about the county coming along and spraying weeds.
