If it is a cutting you just stuck a month ago, I personally would snip the bud off. I would think it should be fine in a 1 gallon pot.

With the soil slightly damp, you should be able to tip the dirt ball out of the pot without disturbing the roots. This way you can check on the root system and see if it would be ready to plant. My guess is it is way too young to plant into the garden. But I have been very wrong before! :)

Did you see any roots at the bottom of the soil? I am more curious than anything :)

The rose may try to grow a new cane at one of the bud eyes below where the bud was, it depends how much energy it has.. if it wants to make new growth OR set more roots.

I never did check for roots, but now it is sprouting at that bud eye and others. It looks very healthy.

How do I keep it that way and when to plant out? In the fall and mulch heavily, or keep inside until spring?
