Is this spike a separate plant, or is it a branch from one plant? In any case, it would be interesting if rooted cuttings taken from it maintain the new color and are as robust as the original.

It is a branch. I will try to get some rooted cuttings and hope they will maintain this pretty color.

costaricafinca posted this on the lovehummingbirds.com forum, and I asked her to also post here. I told her that her 'sport' looks more pink than my coral-pink S. elegans Frieda Dixon. Do you all agree? She had some advice on cuttings vs. layering, but I thought that you salvia experts might better advise her on how to proceed with this potentially new salvia. :-) thanks

My thought would be to cut most of the red flowering branches back allowing for more space for the pink branch.

Take cuttings from the pink branch so you can get some going.
Then marking the pink branch with a tag.Then watch it for more cutting wood. Keeping the red branches removed so the pink on can grow. Also plant one of the cuttings so you have a plant to evaluate. If you think it is a keeper you now have two places to do cuttings from.Or let the other plant
revert back to being all red. Would be nice to have a white
form of S.elegans (rutlans)one day.
I found a pink greggii down the street throwing a sport that
looks much like S. greggii "Teresa"

I just went to a friends house today where he had a fuschia salvia greggii x that had white flower outgrowths coming from one of its stems. different....

The pink forms seem to throw the occasional white branch
more ofter than any other color.
You may want to collect that white form being it will have
a different genetics that the forms on the market.
I have two forms of white one has a larger flower which was found on a white greggii. The other was a seedling found
coming up by Pink Preference. I still need to get a white from Rich that Carol Abbott found. There was a white form from west Texas that Barton Warnock found but I am having
a hard time relocating that plant.They all have different
looks from foliage and form.

Tony Avent at Plant Delights has given the white greggii the trade name Texas Bride. I need a new plant of it and Furman's Red. Does anyone still sell Keter's Red greggii or the Peach and Salmon La Encantada greggiis that Manuel Flores collected in Coahuila?

the peach or Salmon "La Encantada".
Do you know where "Lipstick" or "Texas Wedding" came from? Lipstick reminds me of Keter's Red some. I need to contact him on other Salvia's he collected he had some coahuilensis forms in variety of Lavender colors.

Texas Wedding is what I used to call Alba, which I got from Carroll Abbott a long time ago.

I'll have to call Tony Avent about the provenance of Lipstick.

Lipstick, Flame, and Theresa were excellent performers at the J. C. Raulson Arboretum in Raleigh during the 90 degree heat last year.

Rich, come on over to Raleigh and you can see Tony in person. He is giving a talk about his plant hunting in Greece this Thursday night at J C Raulston Arboretum. By the way, S. microphylla 'Wild Watermelon' was one of the most impressive Salvias at the arboretum last summer while S. mexicana was a tour stopper again in the fall.

Rich, the white I have came from you. Presumably they will come back so cuttings for you can be taken in May. The greggii that puts out white seedlings for me is Wild Thing. Some of them had excellent white flowers, better color and form and larger than Alba. Unfortunately the best of them didn't pass the hardiness test. It is odd, while Wild Thing produced mostly white flowered seedlings, Alba has mostly produced red. It makes me wonder whether Wild Things was collected from the mostly white Texas population.

Wasn't Lipstick another Texas plant? It proved to be somewhat marginal up here - 7a/6b. Several years ago I propagated about 8 of them and 2 survivors were left last summer.
