Midnight Star

This deserti x trifasciata variety I got from Russ (truly the gift that keeps on giving!) a couple of years ago. It has done really well this year out on my deck. My cat knocked off one of the leaves which I stuck back in the pot. The new growth is really beautiful.

Hi, again nice fotos of a nice plant.
Is the Midnight Star a deserti x trifasciata variety?

I have a S. trifasciata X deserti USDA M19522 and a Midnight Star from different sources, so what would be the difference?
Would be nice to know something more about this.

The only info I have on my plant is from Russ's tag which says 'Midnight Star' hybrid deserti x trifasciata.

Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of sans nomenclature can give us some insight.

All I know is it's a gorgeous plant!

I can't see the pix, just the dreaded red X, which when clicked on & asked to 'show picture' does nothing. Bummer, I really wanted to see what it was!

Hi all, I've been on vacation at Hermine Stover's Yahoo Sansevierias forum. A few days ago Cena, asked if I was okay. I assure you I am fine. Just finding it hard to keep up. I just noticed the photos of Midnight Star and they don't look like my Midnight Star at all. Of course being hybrid, there's no telling what such a radical cross as deserti & trifasciata migh produce. I got my plant from Norma Lewis. Her plant has leaves over 4 feet long - its huge.

Thx Kniphofia, for the re-post & the EM. Lovely plant, whatever it is. Do you know what the "midnight" refers to? I've never seen or heard of this one (not that that's unusual), just wondering what the "midnight" refers to, maybe how dark a green the parent leaves are?

Pretty thing, looks well grown, good luck w/ it & thx for the pix!

Kniphofia, your 'Midnight Star' looks as it should, except
perhaps the newest leaf which seems wider than usual. I hope I sent you the right name for this plant, judging from the rest of the leaves, I think so. It should have long, narrow, semi-cylindrical leaves, channelled on the top, and color is dark with no banding, and reddish edges at the top of the channels. 'Midnight Star' was one of the experimental hybrids in the USDA Florida fiber program initiated in the 50s to research sources of natural fibers. Synthetic fibers came along soon after, and the program was
abandoned. The plants were donated to botanic gardens, some of which ended up, interestingly, planted in a dead
volcano called Koko Crater in Hawaii. They survived, and
are still there today, some in great colonies. 'Midnight
Star' was not one that was sent to Hawaii.
