I did another search-using less words and got 73 matches. I knew thee was lots of info about this. I think I will use a cactus and good potting soil mix with 1/3 perlite and let the plant dry out a bit

Yes, that's right. I'd suggest C&S mix + 30-50% perlite. I'd avoid potting soil altogether as pre-made mixes can have peat in them. If they have peat, depending on what kind of waterer you are, peat can make drainage problems.

The key is to have fast draining mix & if you might be an overwaterer, grow 'em in clay. Your closing line abt letting them dry out is a good idea too.

FYI, I find Sans. very unfussy abt what kid of mix they're in. I actually recycle soil for them from other C&S in the apmt & just add more perlite (in my case, I use pumice).

50% Supersoil® and 50% pumice, not perlite. Pumice doesn't float like perlite. You'll be mighty pleased with this concoction, guaranteed.

I can't tell where you live, but Toots is in Wisconsin (don't know if they have pumice there). But I'm in NYC & I KNOW there's no pumice here, I just have it 'cause of a Calif. friend who always brings me some when he visits.

So I make my suggestions w/ perlite 'cause I know that's available nationally, while that is NOT the case w/ pumice. Maybe you don't know that.

pumice is a scarce product to obtain. fact is, I only have one source of it, a C/S nursery. Another ingredient that can be substituted (but heavier) is 1/8" crushed lava rock (scorea), available in many rock/aggregate quarries.

If pumice isn't available, try calcined clay. Look for brands like Turface or Pro's Choice.
