Hydrangeas

They were not morning glories or hydrangeas. But thanks for contributing to my search!

It might be helpful if you gave a bit of a description of the plant that you saw. Was it a spiked flower, for example?

Could you have seen Plumbago?

Try Agapanthus, commonly known, I believe, as Lily of the Nile. I have had some luck with Angelonia and Plumbago.

Spiderwort growes wild, and some folks have it in their gardens. Grows about two feet tall and has sort of garlic like leaves.

We live in Florida, about 1/4 mile from the ocean, and have been growing something called "blue wonder." I believe it has other, similar names. It's a low-growing plant, but truly beautiful with large numbers of blossoms. We're still getting beautiful flowers in mid July, but plants that didn't get plenty of water have not survived.

I second plumbago. Also, salvia guarantica (black & blue) and bog sage.

I am 50 miles from the coast but blue plumbago is a great plant and survives everything so far.

Mexican Petunia (Ruellia?) or Black & Blue Salvia?

Maybe Stokesia or Stokes Aster. It may not make it in your zone, but since it's near the warmer coast.....who know???

I live at the beach and have had success with Blue Daze, plumbago, and salvia.
