I have many, many salvias of many varieties --- because nothing eats them, including deer.

I've practically got a herd of deer around here, and they've never taken a bite of the s. guaranitica B&B that's OUTSIDE my garden gate. So, I rooted some more and planted it on the other side of the gate - at least I can say with certainty that they don't like that type salvia.

The bad news is: my friend has deer eat his Salvia penstemonoides routinely. They especially like the flower buds....;^(

The good news is: that is the only one they attack.

The other question is that his wide-leaved new world ones are sheltered in a fenced in area with his dogs - Would they attack those? Perhaps if hungry enough and the scent were not too strong. Not sure.

Deer usually avoid any dogs, even small ones can damage their ankles and legs.

They ate my coccinea once but it came back and they nibbled on my greggi's before I fenced.

They've walked on and torn and squashed several salvias while having a closer look to see what else I'm growing. :-(

Sometimes deer will not eat the plants but will eat the flowers.

I had a big problem with S. Black & Blue. They left the plants alone and as soon as they bloomed they would come and eat every single flower off.

Very frustrating.

I know they will sometime eat new foliage on many plants that are otherwise 'deer resistant'.

I read some good advice once on a deer-proof plant brochure. "Remember, deer can't read those lists of deer proof plants. If they are hungry all plants are fair game." (p.s. they don't touch my daffodils, bleeding hearts, marigolds, Lenten Rose, lariope). Cover your hydrangeas, forget tulips and by midsummer hostas are chomped on but they always come back.
