Salvia ID assistance needed please...

Hello!

Can you please assist me in identifying this Salvia?

I started it from seed last year and have a list of the seeds (received through trades), none of which match this plant.

The leaves are quite large (some on the bottom are almost a foot long) and it was the first to begin blooming this year.

Do you have an idea which species it might be?

The flower color is actually more of an indigo color rather than the pale appearance in the pic.

I also have a question, I was expecting it to be a smaller (lower growing variety), can I move it safely? I won't if it can't be done....I love the plant (and so do the hummers!).

I agree with Robin. This looks a lot like the classic meadow sage I've known over the last forty years. Salvia haematodes is similar and has delicate lilac flowers, about as large.

It can be moved, but will have to be radically cut back and a good root ball taken, since it tends to be tap rooted. This form should be a good seed producer.

Let it flower first before moving. You should be able to collect loads of seeds, but it will often flower in its second year. Cut it right back after flowering you just might get an Autumnal flush, but don't count on it!
