Hi free tree - The answer is mostly, yes, they have to be pollinated. ;) Some hybrids will produce a form of seed without being pollinated but they are sterile seeds.

But pollination isn't necessarily insect pollination. Many vegetables and a few flowers that I know of are self-fertile. The bloom contains both parts needed so it can pollinate itself.
