I had the same question! However, I still wonder if I dead head now, will I have new growth and blooms this season? I don't want to chop away the little color that is left, if it will take another season cycle to return.

Are those annuals? There's no harm in taking straggly dead stuff off - cut back to a leafy node with swollen axil buds - but perhaps an annual would stop blooming? I would chop them and watch how they grow...
