Cant help this plant always dies here in the tropics without ever flowering I have one at the moment in bud and in the shade it seems to be thriving, who knows I may get to see the

Salvia fulgens is one of the most spectacular Salvias, but it is a very fussy bugger (am I allowed to use that word???) as to conditions!

I can only comment on how it grows in the UK, where we have 3 forms.......the original, with reddish bracts, Fulgens ' El Azufe', a weak plant, and the brilliant form from Mt. Popocatepetl, with the huge green bracts.

It can suffer from die-back, if so, remove the infected stems.

It has a huge root-system, so don't let it become too pot-bound.

Salvia fulgens hates too much direct sunlight, not always a problem in England (!), it likes warmth and humidity, and plenty of water, and a regular half-strength tomato feed, then it will flower very well. Sure, many lower leaves will go yellow, and drop off, this is normal.

Grow it in a semi-shaded position, drown it with water in drought-conditions, watch out for spidermite and any other nuisances..........Salvia fulgens 'Mt' Popocatepetl' is without doubt the best form of this wonderful Salvia!

Mine is tucked behind a S. purpurea. Heavily shaded. It is happy. Hasnt flowered yet though. I still waiting for its beauty to come out. And, its hot down here now.

My experience with it in semitropical North Carolina is to make sure it is planted before it gets too hot and has a chance to establish a good root system. If you wait too long, it will sputter along and fall victim to spider mites.
