Hi Folks,

I live over at the Florida Forum, recently started converting my yard for hummingbirds and now I'm hooked on salvias :-) Anybody have this one or know where I could get it?

    Tom,

    You could try Flowers by the Sea, in CA. They stock this wonderful Salvia, but may be currently out of stock. This is a highly reputable place, with many excellent reviews of their mail order.

    If no luck, email me as I have a few seeds...they germinate quickly and will flower within months.

    I think it should be S. vasquezii. I finally got a taxonomic citation on the subject:

    A new species and a new subspecies of Salvia (Lamiaceae) from Jalisco and Michoacán, Mexico

    Hugh H. Iltis, Jesús Guadalupe González-Gallegos, Theodore S. Cochrane, and José Antonio Vázquez-García

    Abstract. A new species and a new subspecies of Salvia, Salvia vazquezii and Salvia vazquezii subsp. tancitaroensis, from the Jalisco-Colima border and Michoacán, Mexico, respectively, are segregated from the S. gravida complex. They are described, illustrated and compared. A key to the three taxa and a translated and expanded circumscription of S. gravida are provided.

    Taxonomic publications are the gold standard for settling any questions on these subjects, within the areas covered in the article.

    Annie's is calling this S. vazquezii, and so is Cabrillo College, where I recently bought one.

    A well received revision of this species was published last year. Technically Salvia gravida is now Salvia vazquezii subsp. vazquezii. We note this new name as a synonym, and will change in a few years when the world in general catches up with the new name. To almost everyone it is and will be for a long time Salvia gravida.
