Occidental, California is the home of Western Hills Rare Plant Nursery, which was a major spark in the interest in and reestablishment of unusual perennials back in the 70s and 80s. It was started by Lester Hawkins and Marshall Olbrich. When Marshall, the last partner, passed away, Maggie Wych took it over for a while, and it now has new owners.

Western Hills is the inspiration, in part, for other nurseries like Plant Delights (which I occasionally like to refer to as Eastern Hills) and Yucca-Do. Digging Dog and Heronswood also come to mind. Many other smaller nurseries downstate got their stock plants from them. Lester nad Marshall reaffirmed my interest in growing, collecting, and distributing Salvias.
