Where are the seeds????

My 3 year old grand-daughter loves gardening. She helped me winter seed sow and plant in the spring. She knows that you get seeds from other plants. Today she asked; " If pumkins, tomatoes, apples, etc have seeds, then where are the seeds for carrots?" I can not answer her question. So where are the seeds for carrots, lettuce, etc ???

Hi Rose,
Carrots, lettuce, etc. send up flower stalks. Those items are generally picked before they send up a flower stalk. Lettuce tastes bad once the flowers start to form. Some things become inedible like radishes get woody. You can let some make flowers and go to seed. If you collect the seed, then you/she can plant them in next spring's garden.
Also some vegetables are biennials and send up a flower stalk in their second year of growing.

Remy, Thanks for the info. I think we will let some go to seed so she can plant them next spring. The little girl is so into gardening. She told me her fav stor was the green house :)
