Ornamental Purple Millet

I've read that ornamental purple millet will come back true from seed so I want to save some but I'm unsure when to gather them. They are visible on the seed heads but seem to still be firmly attached. Should I wait until they seem ready to fall off? Or will they ever reach that point?
