Verbena Seed

I have this in a hanging basket and I let the flowers die.On the top of the stems are little stick like things.Are these the seed.When I break these sticks there is nothing in them.I collected some of these "sticks" so can anyone tell me if you just plant these or have the seeds escaped already?
