Here in PA I do not cut back my Salvia guaranitica, or S. greggi/microphyllas. After frosts kill the top of the plant I mulch heavily with fallen leaves. I uncover the plants in May, see if any branches are going to produce sprouts, which takes a few weeks at least, then cut off the dead parts once growth has resumed. Some salvias will only sprout from the ground, while others may produce new growth from branches that were well protected.

If in doubt best to leave cutting back till spring - then you know what's dead and what's not. Dead growth can help to protect the crown from frost, too.

Thanks, I'll just leave them then. They are kind of falling over and I didn't know what to do with them. I am not sure what species they are. I'm pretty sure it started with a P....They kind of grow like a ball of folliage and then have shoots that extend from the folliage with purple flowers on them. My daughter has plumosa. I guess the same would go for them....just leave them til Spring?
