leggy salvia caradonna?

I bought some salvia caradonna in july when the plants were $2 a pot at a local Home Depot.

The second they got in the ground they did very well (we had a pretty mild summer). I dead headed the spent blooms and got a second round of growth. Great!

The only problem is that the new blooms have all come on stems that are incredibly long. Because of this the plants seem to be growing 'out' rather than up. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to obtain the expected upright growing habit?
