Salvia looking ragged

My May Night Saliva always starts out looking absolutely beautiful every spring/early summer. By the middle of the summer, it looks like it is dying off with a bunch of sticks just sticking up from the plant, then after some time it will start to come back and bloom again and gain leaves....but at this point, the once, nicely filled in plant that it was, is splindly, and those dead sticks are sticking up amongst other dead sticks that are actually blooming...and it just looks awful. It will make weird leaves and the plant is seperated out instead of a uniform look....it does this every single year and I have no idea why. I also pick dead sticks out of the center of it. I have never deadheaded them or cut them back, I dont know if this would be my solution.

Can anyone relate to what my salvias go through?
