Are my 'San Antonio Sage' dead?

Hi I am new to growing salvia and I hope someone can give me a little insight as to what might be my problem.

I tried to grow three four inch 'tricolor sage' over the summer but they died. I figured it was because I planted them in the hottest part of the year but didn't water enough. So two weeks ago I planted three 1/2 gal 'San Antonio Sage'. Today they look dried up as well. I watered and mulched them (left about 4 inches bare around the perimeter of the plants) when I planted them but haven't watered since. Do they need more water or did I overwater when I planted them?

I am so disappointed, I have never had so much trouble with a plant before. The soil is claylike but drains decently, exposure is full all day sun. I am growing daylilies, gaura, anisodontea and freesia in the area with the sage.

Thanks, I would really like to grow sage but I feel pretty discouraged.
