Hi Marsha,
What I found is that if you break open the pod, take apart a section and hold tight to the petals part and flip the seed end that the seeds pop off and the petals & chaff are held seperate so I throw that part away.
Sorry if that doesn't make sense, but try it and maybe when you see the pod in sections it will become more clear.

I had the same trouble, and realized just the other day that the few flower heads I had brought in and let dry some more, eventually got so crumbly that the seeds were MUCH easier to separate (I had been digging through the petals trying to find seeds before). It still takes time to wait, but at least I wasn't working so hard! :o)
