Raised bed on old blacktop drive

My backyard has an old blacktop drive that we no longer use. Okay, I know the "right" way to do this would be to rip out the driveway -- maybe someday -- but no funds for that this year.

I have lovely shade gardens in other parts of the yard, but this is the only spot (back drive) that gets some real sun!

I want to build some raised beds using brick (or maybe railroad ties) on top of the blacktop but am worried about drainage.

I read an older post about doing this on concrete -- many suggested an 18" depth. That sounds good -- but can I rig up some sort of drainage system? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Shadey
