Gardening in Shade

creating a garden under an elm

I have a big beautiful elm in my backyard and I would love to plant some hostas, etc. around its base to liven up the, well, dirt. I heard that creating a raised bed around a tree might damage roots, but this is a very established elm! It has enormous roots near the base and I would imagine it impossible to dig around them to plant my hostas. Does anyone have any thoughts?
