But still... Why would a bunny only bite off the leaves but not eat them? And a bunny would nibble other plants as well. It's such a mystery that Pulmonaria, which are supposed to have few pests, would be the only plant attacked (but not eaten). It really seems as though something hates Pulmonaria, --that there's something about this particular plant. But no one else seems to have had the same experience with lungworts. It seems so strange...

I was just reading about cutworms... They do feed at night. I'm going to try putting cardboard collars around (what's left of) my plants. Maybe that will solve the mystery. Pulmonaria 'Trevi Fountain' was so beautiful in the Spring. Sigh. I'd really like to see it bloom again next year.

Well, the collars didn't work. Lost another lungwort. Sigh. So, maybe bunnies... Now I'll try mesh strainers over the remaining nubs. How's that for a lovely garden accessory? Kitchen utensils scattered throughout my shade garden... grin. I'll probably give up on Pulmonaria, but I just want to know finally what's cutting them down. Wish I could set up a camera. Bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, deer???? It's a jungle out there.

we have leafcutter ants here that do that type of damage. Have you gone out with a flashlight late in the night to see if you can find your culprit?

After reading your post yesterday, when I thought it might be a woodchuck, which I know eats my Pulmonaria, I woke up to this sight today. Something has removed the leaves from my Ipomea in containers on the deck. The vines are stripped, but the leaves are lying on the deck. I suspect squirrels, but I do not know why they are doing it. FYI, when Woodchucks eat my Pulmonaria, they do it during the day and Critter Ridder (basically cayenne pepper) is an effective repellent.
